FAQ

What blade sizes can the SHARPAL 202H sharpen?

The SHARPAL 202H can sharpen blades up to 0.28 in / 7 mm thick, up to 22 in / 560 mm long, and 0.30 in / 7.5 mm or wider.

Can the SHARPAL 202H sharpen small pocket knives?

Yes. The 202H can sharpen small pocket knives as long as the blade can be held securely. For short blades, one clamp is enough if the blade is firmly secured. For extra stability, two clamps can be placed on the same side. Off-center clamping will not affect the sharpening angle.

How do I clamp narrow or short blades with the SHARPAL 202H?

For narrow blades, secure the blade first. If the blade is too narrow to follow the standard reference distance, ignore the reference distance and clamp the blade as securely as possible. For short blades, one clamp may be enough if the blade is held firmly. For additional stability, use two clamps on the same side.

What is the sharpening angle range of the SHARPAL 202H?

The SHARPAL 202H offers an adjustable sharpening angle from 10° to 35°. For wide blades, the usable angle range may be slightly more limited depending on the blade width and clamping position.

How do I know whether to use the A scale or B scale?

Use the A scale for standard knives when the distance from the clamp end to the cutting edge is 1/2 in / 12.7 mm.

Use the B scale for wide knives when the distance from the clamp end to the cutting edge is 2 in / 50.8 mm.

Why does the system have a built-in 10° starting angle?

The 202H angle gauge is designed with a built-in 10° starting angle. Add 10° to the gauge reading to get the actual sharpening angle.

For example, if the gauge reads 10°, the actual sharpening angle is 20°.

Which grit should I start with?

Start with the grit that matches the condition of your edge.
Use 220 grit only for severely dull, damaged, or chipped edges.
Use 325 grit for edge restoration or heavier sharpening.
For regular sharpening and maintenance, start with 600 grit or 1000 grit.
For final refinement, polishing, and burr removal, use the 3000 grit equivalent ceramic plate, 6000 grit whetstone, and leather strop as needed.

Do I need to use every grit every time?

No. You do not need to use every grit every time.
For a slightly dull knife, you may only need 600 or 1000 grit followed by stropping. Use the full grit progression only when the edge needs repair, major sharpening, or a more refined finish.

Do the fine grit plates need to be soaked or used with water?

Soaking is not needed.
If using the 3000 grit equivalent ceramic plate, it can be used dry or with a small amount of water for a smoother sharpening feel.
When using the 6000 grit whetstone, keep the surface wet during sharpening. Add water as needed to maintain a smooth, well-lubricated surface.

Why do the diamond abrasives feel aggressive at first but smoother over time?

This is normal. New diamond abrasives have a break-in period and may feel very aggressive during the first several uses.
As the surface breaks in, it becomes smoother and more consistent. This does not mean the diamond abrasive is wearing out too fast.
